94. He is not my Co-pilot

“You can tell a lot about a person by the bumper stickers on the car,” Stan began.

“Oh, yeah,” I added.  “Some are funny, some are thought-provoking, and some are maddening.”

“And,” Stan responded, “some are just plain wrong.”

“Anything in mind?” I asked.

“I saw one the other day like that.  It said, ‘God is my co-pilot.’”

“What’s wrong with that?” I asked.

“If I think God is my co-pilot, my thinking is way off base.”

Continuing, he added, “It’s like I am saying to God I am going to a certain place and going to do such-and-such, and asking Him if He wants to come along.”

“That,” Stan said with emphasis, “is not the way it works with God.”

“He is God, and I am not.  He is the Leader, and I am to be the follower.”

“If I consider Him to be my co-pilot, I just might as well have an empty seat next to me because He will not be following me.”

If any one wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.  Matthew 16:24.

Prayer:  Lord, you know my tendency to want you to follow me.  I know that is not what you want; that it is not the way you intend for our relationship to work.  You want me to follow you to wherever you lead.  That is what I want also, and I ask for all the help you can provide to guide me along your path, following you.  Amen.
