“A friend,” Stan began, “told me yesterday that he and his wife are going on their first cruise to celebrate their anniversary in a few months.”
“I bet they are excited about that!” I said.
“Seems that they are now,” Stan said, “but the fellow told me he was real reluctant to sign up because he knew nothing about a cruise. He said he didn’t want to commit to anything he knew nothing about.”
“I guess he must have figured it all out.”
“That’s what I asked him. He said he didn’t know everything, but that he was comfortable that he knew enough and was taking the rest on faith.”
“You know what I did when I heard him say that?” Stan asked.
“Probably told him some spiritual lesson,” I said with a smile.
“You’re right,” Stan said. “I told him that what he had felt about the cruise was exactly what I felt when I first felt God tugging on my heart to draw me to Him.”
“At first I knew nothing about Him and was real reluctant to step forth.”
“Then I learned enough about God to want to venture forth with Him even though I did not understand everything about Him.”
“Stepped out in faith?” I asked.
“You’re right,” Stan said. “That is the only way. If I tried to wait until I knew everything there is to know about God before I made any sort of commitment I would never have begun to walk with Him.”
“It is a walk of faith that is to continue until I take my last breath on this side of eternity.”
“I know I will never understand all there is to understand about God. I also know that as I continue to walk with Him in faith, He leads me with what He has for me to know.”
“And knowing Him is what eternal life is all about.”
And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you want me to know and to understand you. I know, and you know, that such knowledge and understanding will always be incomplete on this side of eternity. But you want me and you to continually draw closer together in an ever-deepening relationship, and I thank you for that. Please fill me with all you want me to know and to understand so I will be yours in the fullest meaning of the word. Amen.
