“It took me quite some time, actually way too long,” Stan began, “but I eventually learned something that is real necessary in my relationship with my wife.”
“What’s that?” I asked
“If something is important to her, I need to make sure it is important to me as well.”
“It is very damaging to our relationship when I act as if something that is important to her is not important to me. Really closes her spirit and shuts her down.”
“Good point. Are you good at that?” I asked.
“You probably should ask my wife,” Stan said with a smile. “She is the expert about that and can give you a better answer than I can.”
Continuing, Stan added, “and just like a lot of the parallels between a marriage relationship and my relationship with God, it is essential that I make certain that what’s important to God is important to me.”
“The reverse is equally important,” Stan added, “by making certain that what is important to me is important to God. In other words, I am not to spend my time on something that is not important to God.”
“How is a person suppose to do all of that?” I asked.
“I can’t know what is important to my wife without knowing her, without spending time with her to really know her; and I can’t know what is important to God, and what is not, without knowing Him in the same way.”
“Actually,” Stan concluded, “that is what eternal life is all about. Knowing God.”
And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3.
Prayer: Lord, I need your help in making important to me what is important to my wife. I ask for your help in my being only who she needs and wants me to be, as well as only who you can and will use for your purposes in her life and in our marriage. Also, please, Lord, open me to know what is and what is not important to you so that I will make important to me only what is important to you. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
