“You look a bit disgruntled this morning,” Stan said.
“I am so tired of the potholes on Third Avenue,” I responded. “They are going to ruin the tires my car.”
“Yeah, they are so bad, I quit using that street,” Stan replied.
And then he added, “Did you know they have repaved Sixth Avenue, a few blocks over?”
“Didn’t know that,” I said.
“Try that one,” Stan replied, “It’s real smooth.”
“You know,” Stan continued, “this subject is a lot like what Portia Nelson talked about.”
“Not familiar with her,” I said.
“She had some real wisdom in a little story about walking down a street. She said she walked down a street, fell in a hole, and took seemingly forever to find a way out.”
“She then walked down the same street, fell into the same hole, and it took a long time to get out.”
“Then she walked down the same street, fell into the same hole, but got right out.”
“She then walked down the same street, saw the same hole, and walked around it.”
“Then she walked down a different street.”
Stan concluded, “A lot of parallels here related to my walk with God and the way to avoid sins that continually ensnare me. Choose to go down a different street.”
Do not be deceived; bad company corrupts good morals. 1 Corinthians 15:33.
Prayer: Lord, you are fully aware of how easy it is for me to fall into the same hole over and over by doing the same thing. Your answer is confession and repentance. I thank you for that answer and I ask you for your help in keeping it constantly before me so that the choices I make in my daily life are in conformity with what you want and what you have for me. Thank you that I can come before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
