“I saw something truly great the other day,” Stan began.
“What was that?” I asked.
“My wife and I were at the sandwich shop in that little mall on Garfield.”
“We had gotten our order and were eating our lunch.”
“A young man ordered a sandwich and drink, but his credit card was refused and he had no money to pay. He left without his meal.”
“My wife saw what had happened and told the clerk she would pay. The clerk went out, caught up with the young man, and told him someone had offered to pay for his meal. He came back, got his lunch, and thanked my wife.”
“Great story,” I said. “That was really nice of your wife.”
“That’s who she is!” Stan said.
“And what is really great about that story,” Stan said, “it that it was the cross in action.”
“What do you mean by that?” I asked.
“God doesn’t forgive us because He loves us and He’s nice,” Stan said. “He forgives us because of the cross of Christ.”
“Out of His love, God gave His Son to pay the price so that I can be forgiven, you can be forgiven, and all who believe can be forgiven.”
Continuing, Stan said, “it’s a free gift, but someone had to pay the price. And that Someone was Christ.”
“Just like the sandwich and drink, it was free to the young man, but someone had to pay.”

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the cross of Christ. Thank you for giving Him and that He was willing to pay the price so that I can have life eternally with you when my time here is done and it is time for me to get on the train. Thank you that I can know and live for you on this side of eternity. And I thank you that I can and do come before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
