“Stan,” I said, “we’ve talked some about discipleship.”

“We have,” he responded.  “It’s a big subject.  I’m sure we will talk about it more in the days to come.”

“I am wondering,” I asked, “since you seem to think it is such an important subject, if you have any idea why there are so few Christians who are willing to disciple other believers?”

“I’ve thought about that,” Stan responded, “and I do have an answer for you, but I don’t know if it is a right answer.”

Continuing, he said, “It might just be one of my personal quirks.”

“Well,” I said, “give me what you got.”

“I think,” Stan began, “thee are so few people willing to disciple others because too many are unwilling to take the first step.”

“First step?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Stan replied.  “In order to disciple, a person has to be a disciple.  And in order to be a disciple, the first step is to deny self.”

“Too many Christians,” Stan continued, “take the self-focused view that they have their ticket to Glory, that’s all they need, and they are willing to hang around the train station waiting for the train, rather than doing as you did, my friend.”

“You left the train station to go and do what God has for you to do, and to become what He has for you to become on this side of eternity.”

“Because you are willing to deny self, I suspect you, too, will become one who disciples.”

“The church desperately needs disciples who are willing to disciple.”

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching to observe all that I commanded you.  Matthew 28:19, 20.

Prayer:  Lord, thank you that you want disciples to carry your message to the world.  Thank you that you want disciples who will disciple others and help them to be and do all you have for them.  Please, Lord, help me to be the disciple you intend by denying self, taking up my cross, and following you wherever you want, whatever the cost.  Thank you I can and do come before you with this in the name of your Son Jesus.  Amen.
