“A lot of people,” Stan began, “think idol worship is a thing of the past, or something for primitive cultures.”
“Seems about right,” I responded.
“I beg to differ,” Stan said determinedly. “For a long time I worshipped the idols of business success, money, and possessions.”
“Those things were too important to me. Way too important.”
“But,” Stan continued, “I can be thankful that God is in the business of smashing idols.”
“How so?” I asked.
“At one point in my life God made it real clear to me what He wanted and what He did not want in my life.”
“And,” Stan continued, “if I am open to listening to Him, He continually shows me what he does and does not want in my life.”
“It is an ongoing process, and He gives me the opportunity to smash the idols He does not want me to worship.”
“And it you don’t?” I responded.
“God is likely to smash them for me,” Stan said.
“At one point in my life, I was moving along very nicely with my career, but it had become way too important to me.”
“I was neglecting everything that was truly important. My wife, my family, and God.”
“In essence, God said one day, ‘enough’s enough,’ and smashed the idol.”
“It was painful and humbling, but, boy, did it get my attention,” Stan said with a big smile.
“God got my attention. And, if I am open, He keeps getting my attention every time I start to wander away from what it is He wants me to worship. And that is Him.”
You shall have no other gods before Me. Exodus 20:3.
Prayer: Thank you Lord, that you want the first place in every aspect of my being. And thank you that you make it clear what you do and do not want in my life. I want only what you want. You know how easy it is for me to get idols in my life. I need and I ask for your help in removing and keeping out of my life those things that get in the way of my being who and doing what you intend. Help me to remove them, and when I don’t take the initiative to remove them, please remove them for me. Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
