“I have a friend,” Stan began, “who has a really hard time staying asleep.”
“Maybe he should try what you told me about the Holy Spirit,” I responded. [Note to reader: see Entry Number106, Sleep Working.]
“I told him that, but I don’t know if he tried it or not. But he generally cannot sleep without the television being on.”
“The sound of the television is sort of like white noise for him.”
“That must be a real problem,” I responded.
“It is,” Stan continued, “but I have a bigger problem when I let the noise of the world, the flesh, and the devil drown out the voice of God.”
“And that is so easy,” he said. “There is a constant barrage of noise intended to keep me from concentrating on what God has for me to hear.”
“Any suggestions for how you do that?” I asked.
“Focus and balance,” Stan responded.
“It is essential that I get myself out of God’s way. It is essential that I focus clearly and consistently on what He has for me, rather than getting sidetracked by all of the noise intended to keep me off balance.”
Continuing, he said, “I live in a noisy world. If I am to hear what truly matters, and that is the voice of God, I have to quiet all of the distracting noise.”
He then added, “If I don’t do that, it is like allowing that noise to put me to sleep so I miss what God has for me to hear.”
Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! Deuteronomy 6:4.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you want me to hear your voice in every aspect of my being. You know how easily I am distracted by the noise of the world. You know how easy it is for that sound to drown out your voice. I need and I ask for your help in overcoming the noise of the world, the flesh, and the devil that seeks to keep me from hearing your voice. Please, Lord, help me to focus only on on you, your word, and your voice. Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
