“You know, Stan,” I began, “sometimes, I just wish God would make me into the Christian He wants me to be.  Why doesn’t He do that?”

“That’s not how He works,” Stan replied.

“Oh, He could just zap you if He wanted, but He wants you to choose to take the initiative.”

Continuing, Stan said, “Do you remember when I told you about drawing near to God and having Him draw near to me?”  [Note to the reader:  See Entry Number 29, Drawing Near.]

“I do,” I replied.  “It made a real difference in your life and in your walk with God.”

“Yes, it did,” Stan said, “and there is a really important point to that.”

Continuing, he said, “When God moved in me and awakened the desire to know Him, I had a choice to make.”

“And that was what?” I asked.

“I could either ignore Him or I could make the choice to draw near to Him and have the incredible sense of knowing He was responding and, in turn, drawing near to me.”

“It was a choice that I had to make,” Stan said with emphasis.  “I had to take the initiative to respond to God.  God left it up to me.”

“But once I made the choice to draw near to God, He responded big time!” Stan said excitedly.

“And it is a daily choice I have to make.  Am I going to take the initiative to respond to all He has for me or am I going to choose to ignore Him?”

“It’s up to me, and it’s up to you, my friend,” Stan concluded.  “It won’t just happen.”

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  James 4:8.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for making it clear to me that you want me to take the initiative in being yours — in being who and what you intend.  Thank you for the assurance that when I choose you over myself, that you respond with all you have to respond with.  Thank you for awakening in me the desire to know you.  Please forgive all of the times I have not responded to you the way I should.  Forgive my lack of initiative and please help me in responding to receive and to embrace all you have for me. Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in the Name of Jesus.  Amen.
