“I had one of those situations yesterday that irritate me,” Stan said one morning.

“What was that about?”

“Of course you know how hard it has been raining lately.”

“Sure do.  It has really been something.”

“Well,” Stan said, “I was with my neighbor yesterday afternoon.  I said something like, ‘it has never rained this much here before.’”

“Can you guess what he did?” Stan asked and then answered.

“He pulled out his cell phone, got on the internet, and said that I was wrong.  That it had actually rained more in January of 1982.”

“The need to be right,” I responded.

“Being right about what’s important is essential,” Stan said, “but being right just for the sake of being right is not very attractive.  It is downright quarrelsome.”

“I’ve done it too many times myself, especially with my wife,” Stan admitted.”

“And,” he continued, “it is all about self.  The self-focused need to be right.”

“It’s a constant struggle for me to not go out of my way to prove I am right about something that doesn’t have any eternal consequences.”

“But, if we are talking about eternal consequences, I have be right.  Being wrong is a bad choice!”

Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, but any fool will quarrel.  Proverbs 20:3.

Prayer:  Lord, you know all about my tendency to want to be right.  Please help me in wanting only to be right about the things that are important to you.  Help me in getting and keeping self out of the way so I represent you to others only as you intend.  Please, Lord, help me to keep focused on being right in your eyes.  Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
