“Are you familiar,” Stan began one morning, “with the expression that ’80 percent of life is just a matter of showing up’?”
“I’ve heard variations of that,” I replied. “Some say ‘success’ rather than ‘life,’ but they all point to the same thing.”
“Do you agree with it?” Stan asked.
“Never really thought about it,” I responded, “but I suppose so.”
“I think,” Stan replied, “while the expression may have some validity in some instances, it certainly is not true with me regarding my walk with God on this side of eternity.”
“How so?” I asked.
“Well,” Stan responded, “as a simple example, just showing up at a church service doesn’t accomplish much if I am not ready to worship God and am not ready to be a part of what He has for me at the church service.”
“Some people may think they get God’s favor by just showing up, but I think they are in the dark and a long distance from the truth.”
Stan then continued, “For another example, if I am alert to what God is doing and I just show up where He is active, but I am not willing and prepared to join Him in what He is doing, I am way off base.”
Stan then concluded, “Life with God is a whole lot more than just showing up. Just being there doesn’t cut it.”

In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. John 14:20.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you want me to be where you are and that you want me to be a part of what you are doing. Please forgive all of the times I have just shown up to be in a certain place, but did not have the willingness to truly be with you. Please, Lord, open me to see you and what you are doing, and help me to get my self out of your way so I will truly and deeply abide in you. Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
