“Stan,” I asked, “was there a time when you really struggled with your faith in God?”
“There was,” he replied. “When I first became a Christian, I had a lot of faith that God would be and do all I thought He would.”
“But,” he continued, “as time went on and I did not pursue my faith as much as I should have, there was a waning in my faith.”
“I began to have doubts about God.”
“But,” I said, “it appears that your doubts didn’t continue.”
“That’s right,” Stan said, “and I am eternally grateful for that!”
“Is there something in particular you can point to,” I asked, “that led to a deepening of your faith in God?”
“Two things,” Stan said.
“First,” he continued, “I had to get out of the way. I was too concerned about what I wanted God to be and to do, rather than focusing on letting God be in charge of that.”
“Second,” Stan said, “I had to take all of my doubts to God Himself.”
“I had to lay all of my doubts on the altar before God and be perfectly honest with Him about those doubts.”
“Did you do that?” I asked.
“I did,” Stan replied. “The natural tendency would have been for me to be afraid to admit to God I had doubts, but that would have been the exact opposite of what God had in store for me.”
“As I laid my doubts before Him, God was gracious in filling me with the sense of His presence. He led me into the depths of His comfort and into a deeper faith with Him.”
“Did you ever have a sense that God was unhappy with you for having doubts?” I asked.
“Never,” Stan replied. “The sense was the exact opposite. The sense was of a loving Father who understood and provided what I needed in erasing my doubts.”
And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that I can bring everything before you, including my doubts and lack of faith. Thank you for receiving me and all of the questions I bring before you. Please help me in never being afraid to approach you about anything. And I ask that you lead me in exact accord with your will to remove all doubts and increase my faith. I believe; help me with my unbelief. Thank you I can and do bring all of my prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
