207. Spread the Word

As we were waiting for our breakfast order, a young woman came by the table.

“Hi, Stan,” she said excitedly.  “Mind if I give you a flyer?  I’m having garage sale this weekend and I would appreciate it if you would spread the word.”

She handed Stan a flyer and bounced on her way.

“Wow, she sure was excited!” I said.

“And it’s just a garage sale,” Stan replied.

“I wonder what she would be like if it was something really important, like life eternally with God or with eternal life on this side of eternity.”

Continuing, Stan said, “Unfortunately, that is what is wrong with too much of the church today.  There is no real excitement.”

“People get more excited about the church school’s football team winning a game than they do about having received the free gifts of salvation and sanctification.”

“Too many are apt to invite their neighbors to see the football team in action than they are to invite them to hear the truth of God’s provision in a church service.”

Stan continued with, “Spreading the word was a priority for the early church, but not so much for today’s church, and I am just as big a part of that failure as anyone else.”

“The Holy Spirit wants me to get and stay excited about spreading the only word that has lasting importance.”

Stan then concluded, “I just need to get my self-focused reluctance out of the way and always remember that a person cannot be transformed into the image of Christ until he or she has taken the first step of being converted.”

“And conversion will not occur until someone is excited enough about the truth to share it with another.”

And the word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great number of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.  Acts of the Apostles 6:7.

Prayer:  Lord, you know how often I am excited about spreading the word of things that are not important in the whole big picture.  And you know how reluctant I am to spread the truth of your provision.  Please forgive me for all of that.  And please, Lord, help me to focus on spreading the truth of you and your word so that people can begin the process of being transformed after they have accepted the finished work of Christ on the cross.  Thank you that I can and do bring all of these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
