262. Choose To Be Blessed

“Let’s talk about blessings,” Stan said one morning.

“What do you want to talk about?” I replied.

“Well,” Stan responded, “I was thinking about there being at least two separate categories of blessings.’

“On the one hand,” he continued, “there are the blessings I don’t have to do anything about in order to receive them.”

“Example?” I said.

“The blessings of life,” Stan replied.  “I don’t have to do anything about the air that comes into my lungs or the blood that flows through my heart.  They are blessings that just flow from the Creator of life.  I am the beneficiary of those blessings without having to do anything except keep on living!”

“And the second category?” I asked.

“The blessings in this category,” Stan replied, “require me to choose to receive them.  They are available, but God will not force them upon me.”

“Again, some examples,” I said.

“There are probably too many to count,” Stan responded, “but here are a few.  How about salvation?  That is certainly a blessing that I had to choose to receive.  Same thing with the blessing of becoming more like Christ.  I have to choose and keep on choosing.”

Continuing, he said, “How about the blessing of the fruit of the Spirit?  I have to choose for that fruit to be manifested in and through me.   Or how about growing closer to God?  Again, the blessing of being closer to God only results from a choice I make to be closer to Him.”

“We, my friend,” Stan concluded, “could spent the rest of the time we both have on this side of eternity talking about the blessings of God that have to be chosen.  The point is I have to be aware of the blessings that are available from God and then, every single day, choose to receive those blessings to the absolute maximum possible.”

“Choose to be blessed,” I replied.

“And,” Stan responded with a smile, “don’t forget to thank God for every single blessing He makes available and pours out.”

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.  Ephesians 1:3.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for wanting to bless me.  Thank you for the blessings of living the life you have given me.  Thank you for the blessings you want to pour out on me, but you wait until I ask and am ready to receive.  Please, Lord, forgive me of all of the times I have chosen not to be blessed by you because I wanted only what I wanted apart from you.  Please open me to seek, find, claim, receive, and embrace every single blessing you have for me so that I, in turn, can bless others in your name and for your glory. Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
