As we were finishing breakfast, Ricky brought the checks, one for me and one for Stan. I picked them both up, saying, “This one is on me.”
Stan objected, saying, “No, let me get my own.”
I was firm. “Someone has to pay and I choose to do it. Please let me.”
“Thank you,” Stan replied. He then added, “Just like Jesus.”
“In what way?” I asked.
“Just like someone has to pay for my breakfast, someone has to pay for my sins and separation from God. With the breakfast, it will either be me or someone else. With my sins, it will either be me or it will be Jesus.”
Continuing, he said, “I will let you pay for my breakfast. And I have already chosen to let Jesus pay for my sins by accepting His finished work on the cross. To both of you I say, ’thanks!’”
“To give this just a little bit of a different twist,” Stan said, “look at it this way. Probably everyone who comes in here for breakfast is prepared to pay for it. But the same is not true for everyone who is going to step into eternity, which we will all do one day.”
Continuing, he said, “Not everyone realizes that someone is going to have to pay for their sins and separation from God. They don’t realize that either they are going to pay or someone else is, and they don’t realize that Jesus has already paid the price and has, in effect, said, “This one’s on Me!”
“They don’t know and it’s time to get busy so they do know!”
When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit. John 19:30.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you sent your only Son to complete what you had for Him to do on the cross. Thank you for the truth that someone has to pay for my sins and separation from you, and that people cared enough to tell me the truth that it would either be me or Jesus. Thank you for allowing me to accept the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Please help me in sharing that good news with everyone who may not realize that your justice will be satisfied and it is up to them to choose who is going to pay the price, either them or Jesus. Lead me and help me to follow. Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
