315. The Greater Fool

“One of my neighbors was over last night,” Stan began, “and he was lamenting over an investment he had made that did not turn out very well.  More speculating than investing.”

“What happened?” I asked.

“Seems like he fell into the ‘Greater Fool’ trap of paying too much for a stock that was kind of speculative thinking he could turn around and sell it for a higher price to someone else also looking for a quick profit. That person would then have then become the next ‘greater fool’.”

“But,” Stan continued, “the bottom fell out and my neighbor seems to be the last ‘greater fool.’”

“That’s too bad,” I replied.

“He said he had learned his lesson,” Stan responded, and continued excitedly, “but the most important part of our conversation is that it gave me an opportunity to tell him about not being foolish in the eternal sense.”

“Was he receptive?” I asked.

“He did not make an immediate confession of faith in Christ,” Stan responded, “but he was certainly open to seeing that he might be foolish in not having examined the claims of Christ.”

Continuing, he said, “I offered to spend time with him and he was receptive to the idea.  I am prayerfully hopeful that he will be open to seeing and understanding the much greater loss that will come from being a fool in rejecting the free gifts of salvation and transformation.”

“Important to take advantage of every opportunity to present the truth so that no one is left holding the bag as a great fool,” I added.

“Amen to that, my friend,” Stan responded.

For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  1 Corinthians 1:18.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for the truth of your provision of life eternally with you when my time here is done. And thank you for the opportunity to know you more fully on this side of eternity as long as you keep me here.  Thank you, too, for the people you bring before me who you want to see their foolishness in not claiming your free gifts.  I confess how many times I have failed to present the truth that will overcome their foolishness.  Please forgive me.  And please, Lord, lead me in every instance, and help me to follow, so that through me you can make an eternal difference in the lives of others. I pray for each one so he or she will not foolishly reject you and your provision.  Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.
