336. Leakage Will Cause Damage

“One of my neighbors came by last night driving a car I had not seen before,” Stan began.  “Turns out it is a rental.”

“Why does he need a rental car?” I asked.  “Did something happen to his?”

“He said his car was making a funny noise so he took it over to Mike’s to get it checked out.”

Continuing, he said, “My neighbor said that Mike listened to the engine, looked at some things, and then asked him was how long it had been since he checked the oil level.  It seems the engine was virtually out of oil and that the funny noise was not really very funny. It had caused a lot of damage to the engine.”

“I check the oil level every time I fill the car with gas,” I said.

“Me, too,” Stan replied.  “But it seems that my neighbor could not say how long it had been for him.”

“That oversight is probably going to cost him a bundle,” I responded.

“Mike is reasonable,” Stan replied, “but I am sure it will be an expensive lesson.”

“My neighbor’s predicament and his failure to check the car’s oil level reminds me of myself when I go too long without checking the level of my filling with the Holy Spirit.”

“I learned a long time ago,” Stan continued, “that if I don’t check for leakage and don’t keep myself filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit, I am headed for a breakdown in my relationship with God, as well as in my relationships with other people.”

“It is likely,” he continued, “that I will not be where God intends for me to be. I won’t be doing what He has for me to do. Also, He won’t be doing what He wants in and through me.”

“In addition,” Stan concluded, “just as my neighbor is incurring a significant financial expense that could have been avoided with his car, I can assure you, my friend, that there is a spiritual expense for me that I prefer to avoid by being filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Be filled with the Spirit.  Ephesians 5:18.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for your presence in me through the Holy Spirit.  I confess that way too many times I neglect to be continually filled to overflowing with His presence.  In addition, I have failed to even bother to check the level of His filling.  I confess those failings and ask for your forgiveness and for you to lead me exactly as you want regarding being continually filled with His presence.  Please lead and help me to follow.  Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
