“One of my neighbors,” Stan began, “is the owner and operator of that little book store over on Grand Street, right off of Main.”
“I know that one,” I responded. Good book store with a cute name, ‘Little Box Book Store’.”
“Nice lady,” Stan said. “The other day she was having an event at the store where the author of a new book was going to be there, with a time to hear him speak, talk a bit with him, and the like. A time to meet him. And, of course, buy a copy of the book!”
Continuing, Stan said, “My neighbor invited my wife and me to have dinner with her and the author at her house after the event was over.”
“Well, that was sure nice,” I responded.
“It was, and we a great time,” Stan replied. “I had some time to really talk with the author and to get to know him more than just casually. Very interesting fellow!”
“That experience,” Stan continued, “is very similar to what God wants for me with Him and His book.”
“In what way?” I asked.
“The difference between knowing a little about what He says in His book, the Bible, and getting to know Him as the Author.”
“The Bible is not just a bunch of words on pages. And it is not just a collection of nice thoughts and helpful suggestions. No, the Bible consists of words from God’s heart that are to be written on my heart.”
“And,” Stan continued, “that can’t happen unless I take the time getting to know Him by spending time with Him in His book and in His presence.”
“If I want to have an ever-deepening relationship with God, I have to take the steps that go beyond just meeting Him. I have to get to know Him.”
“After all,” Stan concluded, “knowing God the Father and His Son is what Jesus said eternal life is all about. Don’t want to miss that!”
And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.” John 17:3.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you want me to know you and that you make yourself available to be known. I confess that too often I do not make the effort to know you as you want. Please forgive me. And please, Lord, lead me in following you to want to know you as deeply as possible on this side of eternity before I step into eternity to be with you forever. Please build in me the desire to place on my heart what is on yours. Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
