“Nobody on this side of eternity,” Stan began, “seems to know for certain who wrote the letter to the Hebrews that is near the end of the Bible, but whoever it was sure had a lot of great things to say. I saw another one of them this morning.”
“What’s that?” I asked.
“How to see God,” Stan replied.
“See God?” I said. “How? I think I would like that!”
“The writer of the letter to the Hebrews,” Stan responded, “said that the way for me to see God is to pursue sanctification, to pursue being set apart for what God has for me.”
“And for me,” he continued, “to pursue anything means that I have to choose to make it a priority. It’s not going to happen all by itself.”
“No,” he added, “just like I had to choose to become a Christian by accepting Christ’s finished work that resulted from His life, death, and resurrection, I have to choose to be sanctified. Wishful thinking is not going to cut it.”
“Wishful thinking?” I replied.
“Yeah,” Stan said, “if I just sit around and wish to be set apart for what God has for me to be and for what He has for me to do on this side of eternity, it’s not going to happen. I have to pursue it, as in making the decision and in taking the steps.”
“Is that kind of like what you talk about concerning eternal life on this side of eternity?” I asked. “Of knowing God the Father and His Son?”
“Exactly,” Stan replied. “I think that the opportunity to know God on this side of eternity is the same thing that the writer of the letter to the Hebrew’s was telling me about being able to see God by pursuing sanctification.”
Continuing, he said, “The more I know about God, the closer I am going to be to Him; and the closer I am to Him, the better I can see Him.”
“It’s just like anything I want to see,” Stan concluded. “If I want to see it, I have to choose to open my eyes and then choose to get close enough to see. I have to choose. It’s not a matter of wishful thinking!”

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for what you have for me to be and do on this side of eternity as I wait to step into eternity to be with you forever. Thank you, too, for the opportunity to know you and to see you as well as humanly possible on this side of eternity by pursuing you and what you have for me to pursue. I confess that too often I do not pursue what you have for me because I choose to pursue something else apart from you. Please, Father, forgive me. And please help me in following your lead in pursuing you as fully as is possible so I will truly see all you have for me to see. Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
