Stan began, “My wife and I used to live near a woman that my wife described as a ‘drive-by friend.’”
“What did she mean by that?” I asked.
“The woman acted friendly, but she really was not interested in being a friend. All of the contact with her was very shallow.”
“My wife prefers to have deep relationships with her friends, but that just didn’t happen with this woman, so my wife decided she would settle for the ‘dirve-by’ relationship.”
Continuing, Stan said, “While my wife settled for that kind of relationship with this woman, God does not want to settle for a drive-by relationship with me. That kind of relationship with Him simply will not accomplish what He wants.”
“It’s like driving by the grocery store, waving, and expecting to have food on the table. I can’t drive by God, wave, and expect to have a deep and growing relationship with Him.”
“Rather than driving by, I need to stop, park, and enter into God’s presence to get to know Him as He desires. Driving by and waving doesn’t work.
Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from your law. Psalm 119:18.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you do not want a drive-by relationship with me. Thank you that you want me to stop and get to know you. You know my inclination to drive by on my way to doing what I want. I need and ask for your help in wanting to stop, to spend time with you, and get to know you as deeply as possible. Amen.
