“My wife and I went to the Good Fortune Chinese Restaurant again last night,” Stan began.

“Did you have a nice time?” I asked.

“Great,” Stan replied, and then added, “the food is always good.  And you already know the part I like best!”

“Another good fortune cookie?” I asked.

“Sometimes I think there must be someone in the back room writing fortunes for the cookies just for me,” Stan exclaimed.

Continuing, he said, “You have probably heard this one as often as I have, but it had special meaning for me.”

“What did it say?” I asked.

“When the student is ready the teacher will come.”

“As I reflected on this one,” Stan said, “it had a special meaning for me.”

Continuing, he then said, “First, when God awakened in me the desire to know Him, I was ready and I responded by drawing near to Him.  He, in turn, responded by drawing near to me and He began the process of teaching me.”

Stan then added, “And, secondly, as I am open to being continually taught all God has for me, He fills me and keeps on filling me with what He has for me.”

I then responded, “It is probably true that when a person is not ready to be taught, he or she won’t be capable of learning anything.”

“Exactly,” Stan responded.  “And on a personal level, I have to be ready.  I have to be teachable. I have to be ready to be taught.”

“If I am sitting there listening to the world, the flesh, and the devil, it’s like the student with headphones on listening to music while the teacher is trying to teach.  It won’t work!”

Stan then concluded, “If I am not willing to be taught, there is no way God can teach me what He wants.  He would just be wasting His breath.”

So that your trust may be in the Lord, I have taught you today, even you.  Proverbs 22:19.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, that you want me to know you, and that you teach me for that purpose.  Please forgive all of the times I have not been willing to be taught because I was not interested or because I thought I already knew enough.  Please, Lord, open me to want to be taught with all you have for me.  Please fill me and keep on filling me with the knowledge you want me to have.  Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
