“Another interesting story from the Book of Acts,” Stan opened the conversation.
“What do you have today?” I asked.
“It concerns the first missionary journey when Barnabas and Saul were in Paphos on the Island of Cyprus.”
“What was going on?”
“They ran into a fellow referred to by two different names who was a false prophet. He was trying to keep his boss from learning the truth of the Gospel of Christ.”
“What names did he go by?” I asked.
“Bar-Jesus and Elymas,” Stan replied.
Continuing, he said, “What this fellow was trying to do has an impact on me.”
“That he was referred to by two different names isn’t the big story here. What is the big story is that he was trying to keep the truth away from someone who was seeking to hear the word of God.”
“And that applies to you today?” I asked.
“You bet,” Stan replied. “I am to be on constant watch for those who are trying to keep me from the truth, regardless of what name or names they go by.”
Continuing, he said, “The world, the flesh, and the devil try to deceive me every day by lies that seek to cover up the truth of the Gospel.”
“My responsibility,” Stan added, “is to recognize and dispel those lies and deceptions as I proceed in my walk towards knowing God on this side of eternity.”
“Amen,” I responded.
And when they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for thus his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the truth. Acts of the Apostles 13:6-8.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you want me to know all of the truth about you and the Gospel of Christ. You know all about those of the false ways who seek to keep me from the truth you have for me. Please protect me from those lies and falsehoods. Please, Lord, open me to discern the truth in every way. Not only discern it, but pursue it and make it an essential part of my walk with you. Thank you I can and do bring all of these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
