296. Destroying With What is Unimportant

“The apostle Paul,” Stan began, “hit me again this morning with another of his fabulous one-liners.”

“What was that all about?” I replied.

“In Paul’s letter to the church in Rome,” Stan said, “he was addressing the whole issue of not letting the unimportant get in the way of what is important.”

Continuing, he said “Paul was specifically addressing the matter of believers getting along with each other about matters of conscience.”

“Such as? I asked.

“What they eat, what days they worship, and, basically, everything they do. The bottom-line Paul was addressing was not judging another.  Leave it to God.”

“But what was it that hit you so much?” I replied.

“What Paul wrote,” Stan said, “about not destroying another person with my acts of conscience, with what I do and what I don’t do.”

Continuing, he said, “Christ died for all.  If I keep another person from that reality by emphasizing things that may be important to me, but which really don’t matter, I am way off base.”

“If I do that,” Stan said, “I may destroy or mess up another person’s opportunity to live eternally with God when it is time to step into eternity, as well as affecting his or her opportunity for walking the path towards spiritual maturity on this side of eternity.”

“I never want to look at myself and have to say, ‘Well, I sure messed that up!’  And I can assure you God does not want that either.”

“I am to focus on what is important, which is Christ crucified, and leave the rest to God.”

Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died.  Romans 14:15.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for sending your only Son as the Redeemer.  Thank you that all who believe and accept His finished work on the cross can look forward to life eternally with you when it is time.  And thank you for the opportunity to know you on this side of eternity.  You make it clear that I am to focus only on the importance of the truth, and not let the things that are unimportant get in the way.  Please help me in never causing any destruction in another person’s life or eternal destination by my focusing on what is not important in the big picture.  Help me to keep myself out of your way so you can do all you want in and through me for the eternal benefit others.  Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
