May 11, 2026 — Knowing the gift of God

After Stan and I told Ricky what we wanted for Breakfast and we were waiting for him to bring it, Stan mentioned that in his morning journaling time, he focused on a verse that reminded him of a neighbor’s personal testimony. “Personal testimonies are great,” I said. “It’s always good to hear what someone has to say about their own. What reminded you of your neighbor’s?”

“A verse in John’s gospel,” Stan replied, “where Jesus said something to a woman that led someone to ask my neighbor a question based on what Jesus said to that woman.”

“That’s kind of complicated,” I said. “Break it down for me. What’d Jesus say to the woman?”

“If she knew the gift of God, as well as who was talking to her, she would have asked Jesus for living water.”

“Okay,” I responded. “I get that part. What was the question somebody asked your neighbor?”

“Do you know the gift of God?”

“Oh,” I replied. “That’s a great question! Jesus is the gift of God, and a lot of people don’t know that.”

“Exactly,” Stan agreed. “That’s what my neighbor said. When someone asked him if he knew the gift of God and he said he didn’t, the person asked him if he would like to know. He said he would, and the person proceeded to tell him how Jesus is God’s gift. He eventually accepted that gift.”

“And,” Stan continued, “because of the impact that question had on his coming to faith, he uses the same question when he’s seeking to reach someone with the truth of the gospel.”

“The same question?”

“Yeah,” Stan replied, “he asks them if they know the gift of God.”

Bible verses to consider:

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” John 4:10.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not sent the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through Him. John 3:16-17.

And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. John 17:3.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for giving Jesus and His finished work on the cross as the way to life eternally with you, the life that begins here and will continue forever. Even though I know I will spend eternity in your presence, I confess that too often while I remain on this side of eternity I don’t tell others about Jesus being your gift so they, too, can have life eternally with you. Please forgive that foolishness. Help me follow every step of your lead in telling others about how you gave Jesus for them. Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in His name. Amen.

Think on this: Have you accepted God’s gift of Jesus and His finished work on the cross so you have life eternally with God? If no, why do you choose to remain separated from Him both now and forever? If you are a Christian with the assurance of salvation and redemption, how are you doing with telling others about God’s gift of Jesus? If you sense the desire for change with any of this, how is that change going to happen? Is that what you truly want? Why or why not?

The need: Since God knows what we need before we ask Him (Matthew 6:8), what does He know you need in order to reach the lost with the truth of God’s gift of Jesus? Spend time on this studying God’s Word, praying, reflecting, and journaling to see what God knows you need. He will show you!

Forward: Do you know others who would or could benefit from this devotional? If so, why not forward it and open them to be part of the conversation between Stan and S. Tory Teller?
