103. In His Name

Note from The Storyteller:  If you have not read entries 1-102, don’t hesitate doing that because Stan has some insight that may help you.  All of the entries can be found at the following website:  www.waiting4thetrain.com.  Also, feel free to forward this email to everyone you think would be interested in reading this blog.

“Stan,” I began, “I have a question for you.”

“What’s that?”

“Each time we have a meal together you pray before we eat.  I’m not sure why you always end your prayer saying something like you are praying in the name of Jesus.  What’s that all about?”

“That, my friend, is a good question,” Stan replied.

“First of all,” Stan began, “it is important to know what it is not.”

“It is not some sort of ‘magic wand’ I wave over the prayer to make sure it happens.”

“And It is not some sort of mystical incantation for the same purpose.”

“And it is not a signal that the prayer is over,” he said with a smile.  “Actually, I could make the point that it should come at the beginning of the prayer, not the end!”

“Also know that there is more than explanation why to pray in the name of Jesus.”

“We will just touch on one this morning.  If you want, we can come back to this later.”

Continuing, Stan said, “I cannot come before God the Father on my own merits. I am not worthy to do that.”

“I can only approach God the Father through the righteousness and the merits of God the Son.”

“My acceptance of Christ’s finished work on the cross gave me His righteousness and opened for me the way to come before the Father.  But it is only through Christ the Son.”

“It’s like saying to the Father, ‘I am here because of your Son, and I come in His name.’”

“Thus, I pray it in the name of Jesus.  And it really is more appropriate that I acknowledge that fact at the beginning of my prayer, rather than at the end, but the Father knows my heart.”

I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.  John 14:6.

Prayer:  Thank you, Father, that I can come before you in the name of your Son because of His finished work on the cross.  Thank you that He opened the way to you.  Please lead me in all of my prayers so that I pray only in accord with your will and His will, so that you will answer my prayers in the way they are presented — in His name.  And I do pray in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
