“I want to re-visit something we talked about a little while ago,” Stan began.

“Any particular reason?” I asked.

“Several,” Stan responded.  “But the main one is something a neighbor told me last night.”

Continuing, he said, “Secondly, it is what I was reading in the Book of Proverbs this morning.”

“Let’s have it,” I responded.

“I am not going to tell you who it is, but a neighbor of mine has fallen into the deep pit of cheating on his wife.”

Stan went on, “Apparently, it all began when he started fooling around with pornography.  Pretty soon, he wanted to live out what he was watching.”

“And,” Stan continued, “the Book of Proverbs talks about an adulteress being a deep pit.”

“Deep pit indeed,” I responded, and then added, “Is their marriage going to make it?”

“It’s an open question at this point.  Your prayers will be appreciated.”

Continuing, Stan said, “Do you remember when I mentioned the name Portia Nelson and something she wrote?”

“Remind me,” I responded.

“She expressed some real wisdom in a little story about falling into pits.  She said she walked down a street, fell in a hole, and took seemingly forever to find a way out.”

“She then walked down the same street, fell into the same hole, and it took a long time to get out.”

“Then she walked down the same street, fell into the same hole, but got right out.”

“She then walked down the same street, saw the same hole, and walked around it.”

“Then she walked down a different street.”

Stan then continued, “Satan has a lot of pits for me to fall into.  If I do not ever walk down the street he has for me, there is no danger of falling into his pit.”

“I do not have to experience falling into pits to know the danger,” Stan added.

“If I am following Christ where He is leading, there are no pits.  Avoiding pits is the goal, but I know that if I wander down the wrong street there is a solution.  Confession and repentance.”

The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit.  Proverbs 22:14.

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for making me aware of the dangers of Satan’s pits.  You know how easily I can go in the wrong direction and follow him rather than you.  Please forgive me for all of those times and please, Lord, help me to see and know the danger of his pits before I ever start moving toward them.  Please lead and help me to follow only you.  Thank you I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
