“Growing up on the farm,” Stan began, “we always opened Christmas presents on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas morning. And our family always did that with a particular uncle and aunt who lived nearby.”
“The uncle was a bit odd in many respects, but he had one thing about Christmas gifts that aways baffled me.”
“What was that?” I asked.
“He wouldn’t open any of his presents.”
Continuing, Stan said, “I suppose he eventually opened them when he got home, but when the gifts were handed out to everyone, he would just stack his up.”
“While the rest of the family, especially the children, gleefully tore the wrapping off of each gift, my uncle just stacked his up and watched everyone else.”
“You’re right,” I said, “kind of odd.”
“God says the same thing to me when I don’t open the gifts He has for me,” Stan said.
“God not only wants me to open every gift He has for me, He wants me to receive and embrace each one. Claim it as my own.”
“In essence, God says to me, ‘Don’t be odd by ignoring what I have for you.’”
Continuing, Stan said, “God wants me to accept His every gift, unwrap it, thank Him, claim the gift as mine, and enjoy.”
“Stacked-up and unopened gifts aren’t what He has in mind.”
Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 2:38.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all of the gifts you have for me. The gift of life eternally with you when my time here is done, the gift of eternal life on this side of eternity, the gifts of being able to be who and do what you intend, and on and on the list goes. Thank you! Please help me to see, understand, receive, and embrace every gift you have for me. And help me to not leave unopened any gift you have for me. Thank you that I can and do bring these prayers before you in the name of Jesus. Amen.
